Opportunities during the school year include:

Long-term Volunteers

Senior Mentoring: guide a rising HEAF high school senior through the college application process from April to January.

Saturday Academy Tutoring: provide academic assistance on Saturdays to middle school students who need additional support.

Gender-Specific Mentoring: lead youth development activities for the Unbreakable Sisterhood and Rising Brotherhood, HEAF’s sorority and fraternity.

Short-term Volunteers

Conference and Workshop Speakers: share information about your profession, give advice about succeeding in college, or discuss other topics at conferences and workshops.

Media Literacy Training: if you’re a media professional, help our students learn to be smart consumers or organize trips to important media outlets.

Special Events Helpers: help prepare food, decorate, check in guests, moderate discussions, or more at HEAF's special events.

Administrative: provide critical administrative support around the office, as needed.

Job Shadowing: provide an opportunity for HEAF students to shadow a professional on a typical workday and learn the reality of working within a particular profession.

College Outreach: help bring HEAF students to your alma mater by linking us with admissions professionals, interviewing our students, or helping to organize campus visits

Corporate Volunteers

Career Mentoring:

HEAF matches groups of high school students to companies or organizations within New York City for a five-week period. Volunteers at the partnering corporations work with students to complete a project that introduces students to the industry and provides them with practical experience in that field. Projects can be specifically designed for students or students can be integrated into current work projects.

Host a HEAF Student Intern:

HEAF works to partner with New York City businesses to offer our high school students internship experiences. Internships are intended to provide practical exposure to careers of interest, as well as the opportunity to recognize the congruence between students' educational plans and their ultimate career goals.

F.A.Q.

When do you accept volunteer applications?

We accept applications year-round, but each volunteer position has its own registration cut-off date. If you miss registration, please contact us! We’ll be happy to assist you.

Are applications required from all volunteers?

Applications are required from long-term volunteers and suggested for short-term and corporate volunteers. If you’d like to volunteer but don’t know in which position, feel free to submit an application, and we’ll be in touch!

I’ve already completed a HEAF volunteer application. Do I need to do so again?

Once we’ve received your completed application, it’s unlikely that you’ll need to complete another one unless you’ve been inactive for more than a year.

Will you notify me about upcoming volunteer opportunities?

Yes, unless they opt out, all volunteers and applicants will be added to our email list to receive notification of upcoming opportunities.

I don’t see a current opening for the position in which I’m interested. Does that mean I can’t apply or register?

Not necessarily - if you’re interested in a particular opportunity, please contact us! We’ll be happy to assist you.

What are your requirements for volunteers?

Requirements vary for each position. Some long-term and short-term opportunities require a Bachelor’s degree (completed or in the process). Please contact us for specifics.

What is your volunteer screening process?

Long-term opportunity applicants may be asked to undergo a phone and/or in-person interview, background check, and reference check. Screening varies for short-term opportunities.

Can I volunteer or help out in another way?

Yes, we’d love to discuss your interests and how you can help. Call us (212) 663-9732 or email us at volunteer@heaf.org.
