Now that you have an idea of your ideal college (or at least the items criterion that is important to you) the next step is to find an institution that matches your criteria as closely as possible.

Here are some questions you may want to ask of college admissions counselors.

  • What are the school's admissions criteria (grades and SAT scores)?
  • Which test does each school require (i.e. SAT II, ACT, SAT, etc?)
  • What is the average class size?
  • What is the student/faculty ratio?
  • What is the school's core requirements/curriculum (English, Math, Science, Language, etc.)?
  • What is the size of the student body?
  • Can you describe the student life and student support services on your campus?
  • What is your job placement rate upon graduation?
  • What percentage of students study abroad and what study abroad programs do you offer?
  • What percentage of your faculty hold PhD's?
  • What percentage of freshmen receive financial aid?
  • What percentage of all students receive financial aid?
  • Do you meet 100% of student's financial need?
  • Are institutional scholarships awarded for all four years?
  • What is your graduation/retention rate for all students and people of color?
  • What is the overall acceptance rate?
  • Is housing guaranteed for all four years?
  • What about HEOP, EOP or other multicultural efforts?
