Onward: College and Beyond

Description of Alumni Events 2007-2008

Alumni Networking EventThursday, December 20th, 2007

HEAF college students and alumni from high school graduating classes of 1999-2008 reunited for a night of food and games at a local restaurant and arcade. Students had the opportunity to meet, interact, and continue to build their network of HEAF peer support and resources.

Onward Retreat
Wednesday, January 2nd - Friday, January 4th, 2008

In January 2008, 28 HEAF college students attended a three-day long HEAF Fellows Winter Conference that focused on the following categories.

  • Personal and Intellectual Growth: Students were asked to reflect on their current experience, define and articulate their personal vision, and look at the impact of maintaining their comfort zones on achievement.
  • Leadership and Community Involvement: Students were asked to define leadership and ethics and identify how to build social capital. They discussed additional undergraduate educational options, such as a semester abroad, internships, and other summer opportunities. They also worked on a personal credo.
  • Career Development: Students examined career awareness and planning. Activities included mock interviews and resume critiques, a post-college options panel, and finding a passion and career.
Students also showcased their colleges to current high school students during the first annual HEAF College Fair.

HEAF Fellows Career Program—Monday, January 7th - Friday, January 11th

Select HEAF college students with strong academic records had the opportunity to receive thorough preparation for their respective career paths through the HEAF Fellows Career Program. Students attended a one-day seminar on networking and business etiquette; shadowed professionals in a variety of careers including law, banking, and government; and completed a service project for current HEAF students.

Senior TributeTuesday, June 3rd, 2008

In addition to honoring HEAF's high school graduates, HEAF invites all graduating college seniors back for a celebration dinner to congratulate them on completing the HEAF continuum - graduating college. Graduates will also have the opportunity to provide advice to our new first-year college students.
