Biography

Nicholas Tynes, Director of College Quest (High School)

After a gratifying career in law enforcement, Mr. Tynes decided to pursue his passion for young people through education and youth development programming. He has volunteered as a youth organizer and mentor in Brooklyn for many years, and brings a keen knowledge of what young people need to succeed to the HEAF organization. Since joining HEAF, Mr. Tynes has assumed a leading role in our service learning initiatives and led student service delegations to the Mississippi Delta, the Seminole Nation in Florida, Senegal, and Brazil. Mr. Tynes has also served as HEAF’s liaison to other college preparatory programs in the city interested in pooling resources and sharing information to increase college access for underserved youth in the city. Most notably, he used his legal training to develop a legal mentoring program for high school students that linked the organization to two major law firms and a federal judge within the Southern District of New York. He received his B.A. from Duke University and his J.D. from Washington University School of Law. Mr. Tynes is also a graduate of the Institute for Not-For-Profit Management’s Youth Program Middle Managers Program at Columbia Business School.
